Apparently, losing to Duke is a big problem.
The Blue Devils got the offense rolling against Notre Dame last week, causing a program-wide meltdown and a terrific tirade from head coach Brian Kelly. But it was a great effort from the Duke passing game that made it a legit win, with Daniel Jones bombing away to pull it off.
Now he’s got to get it done against a miserable Virginia secondary that somehow held up against Cooper Rush and Central Michigan last week for the first win in the Bronco Mendenhall era.
The Cavaliers can throw a little bit, too, in an interesting moment proving that there really is life after an ugly three-loss start.
Kurt Benkert caught fire, throwing for 421 yards and five touchdowns against the Chippewas, and unlike the previous few games, he didn’t have to do it in desperation comeback mode. He was sharp, he spread the ball around well making the right decisions, and he proved the offense really can work.
It’ll be a back-and-forth shootout between the two passing games, with the outcome decided on turnovers. Both teams have problems giving the ball away, but Virginia will do it a little bit more, and the Duke pass defense – a bit better than Virginia’s – will come up with just enough second half stops to pull out the tough win at home.
