Vanderbilt vs. Tennessee State Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 22
Game Time: 7:30 pm
Venue: Vanderbilt Stadium, Nashville, TN
With one big win and one big stop to beat Georgia, now Vanderbilt can dream the impossible dream of going bowling by winning three of the final five games. That’s not going to happen without a win over Tennessee State.
The Tigers aren’t going to be a true layup, cranking up a terrific offense to a 5-1 record, turning into a major factor in the Ohio Valley Conference race. They don’t make mistakes, they’re great at forcing turnovers, and they’re just dangerous enough to give the offensively-challenged Vanderbilt team a problem.
Can the Commodores possibly find some semblance of an offense after failing to score more than 17 points in five of the seven games?
They’re dead last in the nation in total offense with an ugly and ineffective passing attack that goes absolutely nowhere. However, even though they don’t have an O, they have an uncanny knack for being able to grind games down to a dead stop. They didn’t beat Georgia as much as they did wear the clock down to a nub.
It also helped with the defense came up with a gem against the run, with soon-to-be-everyone’s-All-American Zach Cunningham coming up with 19 tackles including the game-winning fourth down stop.
Tennessee State, though, should be able to move the ball through the air. This will be tight, but the Commodore running game will take over in the second half to survive the scare.
