Utah (7-2) vs. Arizona State (5-4) Game Preview
Date: Thursday, Nov. 10
Game Time: 9:30 pm
Venue: Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, AZ
The Pac-12 South is one of the best races in college football with USC, Colorado, and Utah all in the mix for the title. While the Trojans might be out of the College Football Playoff hunt with three losses, Colorado and Utah are still in the chase, needing to win out and getting a little lucky along the way.
Arizona State is simply hoping to field a team.
The Sun Devils have been decimated by key injury after key injury, and with little to no depth to count on in certain spots. On the plus side, they’re sill alive for a bowl bid, needing one more win. The negative? They’re on an ugly three-game losing streak and with four losses in the last five games.
The offense has been good enough, but the defense is a disaster, ranking dead last in the country against the pass and allowing 37 points or more in five of the last six games. But after two weeks off after getting rolled by Oregon, and in the final home game of the season, this is as good as the they’ll be the rest of the season with trips to Washington and Arizona to finish things up.
The Sun Devils don’t need to put up huge numbers; they just need a win again.
On the other side, there’s absolutely nothing flashy about Utah – unless it’s playing UCLA.
Joe Williams and the running game pounds away, there aren’t a lot of huge mistakes in terms of turnovers, and outside of one really big punt return by Washington, the punting game is stellar.
While that win 52-45 win over UCLA was just a few games ago, this isn’t necessarily a team looking to get into wild and crazy shootouts. As long as the defense is doing what it’s supposed to do against the run, and if Williams is moving the chains, the second-best team in the nation in terms of time of possession should be able to control this from the start.
ASU QB Manny Wilkins is expected to go with an arm injury, but this should be the game for Utah’s Troy Williams.
He hasn’t had to bomb away thanks to the return and the running of Joe Williams, but he threw for 245 yards or more in five of the first six games of the season. This week, he’ll fire at will, but ASU will keep up the pace enough to make this a must-watch on a Thursday night Pac-12 After Dark must-see showdown.
