Is Oregon State about to show that it can actually play?
After an awful first month of the season, the Beavers pulled off one of the biggest shockers in a shocker of a Pac-12 season with a brilliant offensive performance in the 47-44 overtime win over Cal.
The defense did its part, too, holding down Davis Webb and the Bear passing game allowing just 124 yards, but it was the spread attack that took control of the game and went off for 474 yards and six scores.
QB Ryan Nall couldn’t be stopped, cranking up 221 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries, and fellow QB Darell Garretson was on fire, too, coming up with 105 yards and two touchdowns on just ten carries.
One big problem, though – Utah’s defense isn’t Cal’s.
Of course, it’ll be tempting to assume that since Cal handed Utah its only loss two weeks ago, and Oregon State just did what it did to the Bears, of course the Beavers should be ready to rock at home.
But Utah’s back seven can tackle – unlike the Cal D. It held down the Arizona running game last week, slowed down the now red-hot BYU ground game, and it’s done a decent job all year with a strong line and smart, tough linebackers who should be able to handle the spread.
Of course it’s a new year and both teams are far different, but the Utes held the OSU offense to just 104 rushing yards last year.
With a brilliant punting game, a grinding offense, and the run defense should be able to hold up just fine, Utah is built for a key win to stay deep in the hunt for the Pac-12 title chase.
