UNLV (2-4) vs. Hawaii (3-3) Game Preview
Date: Sunday, Oct. 16
Game Time: 12:00 am
Venue: Aloha Stadium, Honolulu, HI
Look at who’s on a roll? All of a sudden, with two wins over Nevada and San Jose State, Hawaii is in the hunt for a bowl game with a good running game and an improving defense that’s turned things around in a big hurt after an awful September.
UNLV came up with a blowout win at home over Fresno State, but the offense couldn’t get going against San Diego State and hasn’t been effective enough to overcome a defense that doesn’t seem able to come up with a timely stop. The Rebels weren’t awful in their losses to UCLA and Central Michigan, but you don’t lose to Idaho at home.
The Rainbow Warrior running game rocked against Nevada, while the passing attack was razor-sharp over the last two weeks with sophomore Dru Brown connecting on 39-of-51 passes for 509 yards and four scores without a pick in the wins.
Meanwhile, UNLV is struggling to find something that works on a weekly basis. How bad has the passing game been? It’s only hit on over half its passes in one game – Idaho – against an FBS team, and last week it hit rock bottom completing just 2-of-13 passes for nine yards and a pick, and the ground game didn’t pick up the slack.
It’s not going to work all of a sudden after the trip to Honolulu. The Rainbow Warriors will keep the momentum going.
