UCLA (2-2) vs. Arizona (2-2) Game Preview

Game Time: 10:30 pm
Venue: Rose Bowl, Pasadena, CA
Why UCLA Will Win
There’s a lot to rip on UCLA for, and there are plenty of things that need working on – the ground game has to show up, the offense needs to be more explosive, the return game needs to be better – but the run defense has been good enough so far.
It’s been physical, it’s been effective, and it’s gotten the job done against teams Texas A&M, BYU and Stanford teams with dangerous backs.
The Aggies and Cardinal ran for over 200 yards and came up with several good runs, but the defense did just enough to keep the game alive. It wasn’t a brick wall, but it was good enough. Against Arizona, it’s going to have to be even better.
It was a big goal to get tougher and more physical up front, but this is a speed D, too. This group can move, with the back seven getting in on just about everything when it comes to run support. The Wildcats live on getting their runners in space and using their speed to come up with big gashes, and that’ll happen from time to time, but the Bruins will win their share of battles.
Why Arizona Will Win
Where’s the UCLA running game? Granted, Texas A&M’s run defense has been strong, and Stanford is Stanford, but the ground attack has been nothing more than a rumor at times with almost all the production coming against UNLV in the one easy win. That puts all the pressure on Josh Rosen, and he’s been just okay.
He’s been accurate, and he’s not giving up picks after throwing three against Texas A&M – including a killer one late – but the offense needs more than just Mr. Mustache trying to bomb away. The offense needs more balance, and needs to be able to close out drives with points – this thing stalls way too often.
Can the Arizona offense make this a firefight? QB Anu Solomon is still trying to get right after suffering a knee injury, but Brandon Dawkins has shown, he can handle the offense and get it rolling, throwing well in his three games of work while ripping through Washington for 176 of his 391 rushing yards and two of his seven scores.
If you can run on the Huskies and their NFL talent, you can run on anyone.
What’s Going To Happen?
Arizona has the firepower to keep up, and it will in a wild and crazy game with plenty of twists and turns, and a huge day from Rosen to get UCLA back on track.
Both teams are two plays away from unbeaten, and the loser will make it three games – it’ll be a shootout down to the end.
For those of getting into the #pac12afterdark world – and if you’re not, you should – this will be worth it.
