Bowl and Conference Implications
South Florida will win the East with a win and a Temple loss to East Carolina. UCF will finish third in the East no matter what. Both teams are bowl eligible.
What’s Going To Happen?
It’s the I-4 Bowl between two good teams that should be in the Big 12, but aren’t being considered for expansion for some crazy reason.
But I digress.
South Florida needs to take care of business and hope for a Temple loss to have a shot against Navy for the AAC title – the Bulls beat the Midshipmen three weeks ago. The defense is starting to struggle – allowing 42 points or more in three straight games before having a few issues against SMU – but the running game is more than making up for it.
Breathtaking at times, the USF ground attack has ripped apart everyone but one team – Temple – with 200+ yards the norm in ten of the 11 games.
UCF gave up 348 yards and three scores on the ground last week to Tulsa.
The Knights have been entertaining at times thanks to a defense that’s been a rock at times, doing a nice job against most passing attacks and dominating the mediocre offenses on the schedule.
Great at getting off the field, the defense dominates third downs, but the USF backfield continues to rumble with QB Quinton Flowers on a run of 100 yards or more in five of the last six games. That might not continue this week, but the rest of the offense will do just enough as the game goes on to survive a scare.
The opportunities will be there, but UCF won’t have the passing game or the timely attack to take advantage of their scoring chances. USF will move the chains, UCF won’t.
