South Florida and Cincinnati are more than good enough to take the East with the honor of facing Houston for the American Athletic Conference championship, and this might turn into an elimination game.

East Carolina has to go to USF next week and has to hit the road to deal with Cincinnati, too, while UCF has to also go on the road to face the Bulls – but it has to face a road trip against Houston along the way.

The Knights have come along quickly under new head coach Scott Frost, showing off a better ground game that’s been able to overcome injuries to freshman RB Jawon Hamilton and QB Justin Holman to keep on rumbling. They blew away FIU last week and pushed Maryland in double overtime, but this would be the big win ithe program really needs to show that it’s back.

Frost might be an offensive coaching star, but it’s been his defense that’s getting the job done in all phases. The pass rush has been terrific, and the big plays behind the line have been stifling at times – even against Michigan.

One big problem – the UCF O line is giving up too many plays of its own into the backfield.

East Carolina’s passing game has more pop and more weapons to make UCF have to press a bit too much. As long as the Pirates can manage to not screw up – turnover margin is a massive problem, but UCF isn’t all that great, either – they should get far more out of Philip Nelson and an offense that’ll break out after two rough road games against South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

UCF might be better, but it’s not there yet.

UCF (2-2) vs. East Carolina (2-2) Prediction
