Tulsa vs. Memphis Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 29
Game Time: 8:00 pm
Venue: Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, Memphis, TN
Navy is owning the AAC West at the moment, and while it’s still going to be a fight to the finish, the loser of this game will be all but out of the conference title chase.
Tulsa got past the heart-ripping loss to Houston to throttle Tulane 50-27, coming up with its sixth game in eight with 43 points or more.
Memphis has a little offense, too, averaging over 38 points per game, but losing a key showdown against Navy last week. With USF and Houston still to play, and SMU and Cincinnati on the road, there’s a lot of work to do. But getting a win over Tulsa to become bowl eligible would be a strong answer for the program that’s in a rebuilding mode.
The Tiger secondary has been strong at coming up with big plays, picking off 11 passes on the year for a team that’s +7 in turnover margin. But the Tulsa offense doesn’t give up a bunch of mistakes, throwing four picks against Ohio State and spreading out four more over the last five games – and it’ll keep pressing the MU pass defense.
That means there should be a shootout with both quarterbacks about to bomb away.
Riley Ferguson has been solid so far this year in place of Paxton Lynch, leading the Memphis offense with three games of 333 yards or more in three of the last five games. However, he only has three touchdowns and four picks in his last four games, but this week he’s going to have to take over at times to keep up with Dane Evans. The Golden Hurricane passer might be a bit streaky, but he’s a 200-yard machine.
Both passers will have big days, but Tulsa will run a bit better to come up with a little more balance. But at home for just the second time since September 24th, Memphis will hang on for the win in a fun battle.
