Why Texas A&M Will Win
Is it really time to start getting fired up about a 2-0 Texas A&M team that didn’t wet the bed against UCLA – but came close to doing it?
The Aggies haven’t been the Johnny Manziel Fun Time Show of a few years ago, but the offense got all tuned up against Prairie View A&M and the defense was fantastic against UCLA – outside of a few late drives.
The special teams are working, Trevor Knight has been excellent, and this looks like a solid and strong overall squad that might be Kevin Sumlin’s most dangerous one yet. But now it has to prove it.
Auburn’s running game rocked against Arkansas State, but the offense is still trying to figure out something it can consistently rely on. How do you stop what the Tigers like to do? Get to the backs and the quarterback before they can get going.
The Aggie defensive front was supposed to have a few issues against the supposedly new and more physical UCLA offensive line, and it didn’t matter. A&M came up with ten tackles for loss and five sacks.
Why Auburn Will Win
It’s Arkansas State, not Arkansas, but the Auburn offense looked the part against last week.
John Franklin III got on the field, but the O stuck with Sean White, Kerryon Johnson turned in his second straight solid game – running for 124 yards and two scores – and the line was terrific.
It’s easy to be moved by the problems against Clemson, but that’s Clemson – the Tiger defensive front is going to be College Football Playoff good again over time. The A&M defensive front might have been good so far, but – yeah, it’s just one game against a Sun Belt team – Auburn is starting to show the right makeup and style to produce anyway. It’s starting to hum again, and it’s going to run and keep control of the game. Texas A&M will get crushed in terms of time of possession.
And if Sean White can hit 74% of his passes again for 244 yards and three scores like he did against Arkansas State, A&M will be in big, big trouble.
What’s Going To Happen?
Which team will show up – for both sides?
Can Trevor Knight continue to be the steady hand for a team with so many weapons? Yeah, but the Tiger pass rush will get to him and the secondary will do its part for a defense that’s somewhat quietly been terrific so far.
Don’t let the overall defensive stats fool you – Auburn has only allowed one touchdown pass so far, and it’ll clamp down in a good, tough win.
