Bowl and Conference Implications
Tennessee is out of the SEC title hunt after Florida’s win over LSU last week, but it can finish second in the East with a win. Vanderbilt can become bowl eligible with a win, but it should get a bowl game no matter what as a 5-7 team and high up in the APR rankings.
What’s Going To Happen?
Can Vanderbilt get it done? Can it not only get to six wins to assure itself of a bowl game, but also put a nail in the coffin of an underwhelming Tennessee season?
The Commodores appeared to be sunk after a losing to a bad Missouri team two weeks ago, but all of a sudden, they found an offense against Ole Miss and the the season and bowl hopes were still alive.
There’s still little happening with the offense, but against the Rebels, Ralph Webb managed to crank up 123 yards and three touchdowns to go along with a Commodore defense that did its job.
Now, against a one-man Tennessee offense, the Vandy D has up its game.
Maybe it was because the season needed him to step up, and maybe it was because of the loss of RB Jalen Hurd, but QB Joshua Dobbs has stepped up to take back the season with two straight 223-yard, three-touchdown passing games, while running for 147 yards and two scores against Kentucky, and 190 yards and two scores last week against Missouri.
And now he has to do it all again, even if this game doesn’t mean much to the Vol season.
Tennessee bounced back from the loss to South Carolina to win three straight it was supposed to win, but was too late – the door was left open for Florida, and it ran through it.
But the Vols still have a ten-win season there for the taking by winning this week and winning their bowl game. That might not be what they were looking for in a season that should’ve finished with an East title, but it’ll have to do.
The problem will be Zach Cunningham and a Vanderbilt defense that’s just good enough to bottle up Dobbs and give the offense a few key scoring opportunities.
Tennessee is miserable when it comes to time of possession, and Vandy lives for it. That’ll be the difference.
The Commodores will have the ball for close to 40 minutes, they won’t miss when they have their chances, and they’ll pull off the tough win they need for their first bowl appearance since 2013.
