So how’s your week going?
Tennessee not only suffered the indignity of losing to South Carolina – all but ending any SEC title hopes – but it took a hit to its program and its running game with star RB Jalen Hurd leaving the team. Throw this with a knee injury to Alvin Kamara, and a Volunteer ground game that’s been a problem all season long, now might be an absolute disaster with any more injuries.
John Kelly stepped up against the Gamecocks, finishing with 94 yards and showing the flash he cranked up a few weeks earlier against Texas A&M, but the Vols need to use this game to find more options who can help carry the workload.
Tennessee Tech couldn’t be coming at a better time.
The Eagles haven’t played an FBS team yet this season, and it’s about to get crushed by a team in desperate need of showing something positive.
The defense struggles way too much, and the giveaways are a major problem, but the real nightmare for Tennessee Tech will be to try running the ball. The beleaguered Vol run defense will catch a break, while the solid secondary will take over and keep this from ever getting into dangerous territory.
It’s Tennessee. It’ll be sluggish, and it’ll look awful, and then it’ll try, and then the points will start rolling in. After a three-game losing streak, the Vols will get over the doldrums with a hot second quarter to make everything seem all better.
With Kentucky, Missouri, and at Vanderbilt to close, there’s still a shot at a ten-win season – throwing in a bowl victory.
That’s not much of a consolation prize for a program with College Football Playoff aspirations, but it’ll have to do.
