And now the spotlight is on.
Baylor is still unbeaten, but it hasn’t played anyone yet and still has the big boys to play. West Virginia still has several nasty games left, but it proved its mettle – at least to a point – in wins over Missouri and BYU. Throw in the wins over Kansas State and Texas Tech over the last two weeks, and the Mountaineers are starting to become the sleeper Big 12 title pick.
The defense shut down the Red Raider offense to a dead stop, the offense mucked it up against the Wildcats, and the veteran team overall has proven it can come through when needed and adapt when it has to.
But now it has to face a rested TCU team in desperate need of a positive anything.
With two weeks off, did the Horned Frogs find anything with their defense? The secondary has been abysmal all year long, and while the offense has been great, it screwed itself over with turnovers against Kansas in a 24-23 thank-you-missed-Jayhawk-field-goal close call.
But wen with the problems and concerns, the Horned Frogs are still very, very close to being unbeaten, losing wild, close shootouts to Arkansas and Oklahoma. They’re built to handle the next few weeks against Texas Tech, Baylor and Oklahoma State, but first they have to deal with the best defense it’s faced all year.
Can Kenny Hill find his accuracy again? The Horned Frog QB has thrown for a ton of yards, but he’s been a wee bit off at times throughout the last two games, including the three pick performance against Iowa State.
Can Skyler Howard stay hot? The Mountaineer QB cranked it up against Texas Tech, throwing for 318 yards and a score, while going without throwing a pick for the first time all year.
Yes and yes.
Expect the big shootout that West Virginia vs. Texas Tech wasn’t.
Hill will be fantastic, the TCU defense will be lousy, and the West Virginia balance will do just enough to get by at home in a thriller.
And the national attention will really start to come.
