Two years ago, this was the game the meant everything to the College Football Playoff world. Last year, this was the game that might have been the ugliest – thanks to the weather – big game of the season. This year, it’s about survival for one team and trying to bounce back for another.

Baylor finally faced a halfway decent team again for the second time all year – Oklahoma State was the other game – and lost. The 35-34 gaffe to an okay Texas team hurts, but it wasn’t a CFP deathblow. Win out, go 11-1, and the Bears could get really close, if not get into the fun.

However, three of the last four games are away from Waco, and now the offense has to gear it back up at home against a struggling Horned Frog team still trying to stay in the hunt for a bowl game.

The Horned Frogs have lost two straight and three of the last four, with the offense starting to sputter over the last few weeks and the defense not playing up to Gary Patterson’s snuff. The secondary came up with a nice day against the Texas Tech offense last week, but that was a game it needed to win and couldn’t come through.

Against the Bears, the TCU defense has to hold up against the balanced offense that’s still working fine post-Briles.

Seth Russell might be banged up, but he’s ready to roll after an awful game against Kansas and a mediocre day last week against Texas. Terence Williams and the running attack has been able to pick up the slack – he went for 180 yards and a score last week against the Longhorns.

TCU’s defense needs to get better on the fly, QB Kenny Hill has to improve after failing to throw for more than 160 yards over the last two weeks, and the program needs to somehow find a big moment it can use to turn around the season.

But this will be when Baylor bounces back.

The offense will be too steady, the secondary will be too solid, and TCU will keep sputtering in another loss to all but finish off the sinking season.
