Sun Belt Week 2 Rankings, Predictions & Quick Takes

How are the Sun Belt Predictions so far? SU: 12-6, ATS: 3-9

1. Appalachian State (1-1)

Final Score: Appalachian State 31, Old Dominion 7
Prediction: Appalachian State 31, Old Dominion 17, ASU -21
Up Next: Miami

Quick Take: The Mountaineers didn’t suffer any sort of a letdown after the Tennessee heartbreaker. That’s what happens when you’ve got a veteran backfield with talent. Marcus Cox dominated with 133 yards and three scores, and Taylor Lamb – outside of a pick – had a sharp passing day. The O converted four of five fourth down tries, but only two of 13 third down chances.

2. Georgia Southern (2-0)

Final Score: Georgia Southern 24, South Alabama 9
Prediction: South Alabama 34, Georgia Southern 27, GSU -13
Up Next: ULM

Quick Take: It might not have been a perfect performance, but the running game did what it was supposed to do by controlling the clock and keeping USA off the field, while the defense bent, but only allowed three field goals. The quarterbacks were outstanding with Fabian Upshaw leading the team with 108 yards, and Kevin Ellison finishing second with 86 yards and a score.

3. South Alabama (1-1)

Final Score: Georgia Southern 24, South Alabama 9
Prediction: South Alabama 34, Georgia Southern 27, GSU -13
Up Next: at Louisiana

Quick Take: Considering the run defense didn’t really do its part, and the USA offense never found a groove, the team hung around in a game that should’ve been a blowout. It was the worst possible scenario: Georgia Southern controlled the clock, and USA settled for field goals instead of touchdowns. The offense moved the ball, but the D couldn’t get off the field.

4. Troy (1-1)

Final Score: Clemson 30, Troy 24
Prediction: Clemson 48, Troy 10, Clemson -35.5
Up Next: at Southern Miss

Quick Take: Yeah, there are moral victories. Clemson is national-title good again, but Troy didn’t give up, didn’t quit, and did everything possible to keep fighting late even though there were too many misfires on third downs, 11 penalties, and three turnovers. What’s going to bug the team? All those mistakes and what might have been if they played a clean game.

5. Arkansas State (0-2)

Final Score: Auburn 51, Arkansas State 14
Prediction: Auburn 27, Arkansas State 17, Auburn -19.5
Up Next: at Utah State

Quick Take: The defense didn’t show up. Auburn’s offense was eventually going to work, and it happened to explode on the Red Wolves with the defensive front having a nightmare of a game. Chad Voytik threw well hitting 15-of-21 passes, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the offense couldn’t keep up the pace with the D allowing more than 700 yards.

6. Texas State (1-0)

Up Next: at Arkansas

7. Texas State (1-0)

Up Next: at Arkansas

8. New Mexico State (1-1)

Final Score: New Mexico State 32, New Mexico 31
Prediction: New Mexico 41, New Mexico State 17, New Mexico -12
Up Next: at Kentucky

Quick Take: The Aggies came up with a gut-check rivalry win without Larry Rose III. How? Tyler Rogers did a little of everything leading the offense to late scores finishing with 205 yards and two scores, while also helping with 21 scores. Shockingly, the defense held up against the run, and the O didn’t turn it over finishing a +2 in turnover margin.

9. Louisiana-Lafayette (1-1)

Final Score: Louisiana-Lafayette 30, McNeese State 22
Prediction: UL Lafayette 45, McNeese State 10
Up Next: South Alabama

Quick Take: It certainly wasn’t easy, but Elijah McGuire came through with 139 yards and Anthony Jennings did his part with 170 passing yards and a score to go along with two rushing scores. The defense was a rumor at times allowing McNeese State to move way too easily, giving up way too many yards and allowing the Cowboys to control the clock for almost 37 minutes.

10. Idaho (1-1)

Final Score: Washington 59, Idaho 14
Prediction: Washington 58, Idaho 13, Washington -37.5
Up Next: at Washington State

Quick Take: Idaho was able to dink and dunk a little bit, but Matt Linehan only threw for 187 yards with a score on his 19-of-29 day – that wasn’t going to be enough to keep up with what Washington was doing. That’s an elite team the Vandals had to deal with – the Huskies are going to blowout plenty of teams – but Idaho’s O needs to be able to bomb away. Up next? Washington State – uh oh.

11. Georgia State (0-2)

Final Score: Air Force 48, Georgia State 14
Prediction: Air Force 45, Georgia State 20, Air Force -18
Up Next: at Wisconsin

Quick Take: The offense was simply never on the field. The defense couldn’t figure out how to come up with a third down stop, Air Force rumbled at will, and Georgia State’s O didn’t have enough chances. Even so, the Panthers didn’t do enough when they had their chances with just six first downs.

12. ULM (0-2)

Final Score: Oklahoma 59, ULM 17
Prediction: Oklahoma 52, ULM 6, OU -46.5
Up Next: at Georgia Southern

Quick Take: On the plus side, Garrett Smith came up with two huge pass plays in the third quarter with a 73-yarder to R.J. Turner and a 43-yard touchdown pass to Alec Osborne, but the Warhawks ran into a buzzsaw. Oklahoma was going to come out roaring against anyone this week, and ULM happened to get in the way.
