Why Washington State Will Win

The Cougars almost had them.

Luke Falk went off last year against the Cardinal throwing for 354 yards and two scores in the tough loss, but now he might just be better.

And Stanford might just be worse.

Either Washington is amazing, or Stanford was exposed last week in a blowout 44-6 loss with nothing working quite right. There’s still no passing game – other than a desperation late drive against UCLA – and Christian McCaffrey can only do so much.

The vaunted defense hasn’t been a brick wall, either, allowing more than 200 passing yards in all four games and giving up way too many midrange throws. UW’s Jake Browning picked the Cardinal secondary clean, and so far in Pac-12 play, there haven’t been any issues dinking and dunking when needed.

The Cougars are the anti-Cal when it comes to the high-octane passing game, doing a terrific job of keeping the chains moving and controlling games throughout – Wazzu owns the time of possession. If Stanford doesn’t dominate the clock, it’ll have a hard time keeping up.

Why Stanford Will Win

Okay, Ryan Burns. Now it’s time to crank it all up.

It’s been easy for a while for Stanford with McCaffrey being the offense, the defense holding firm when it’s had to, and the passing game along for the ride just to mix things up. However, when Washington loaded up to stop McCaffrey and make the Cardinal try to win the game down the field, it didn’t happen.

Stanford only converted 2-of-12 third down chances.

McCaffrey will get his yards and his scores – he only gets into the end zone at home – but now the Cardinal have to use all the parts. Against the Wazzu passing machine, get ready for Stanford to change things up.

Burns has yet to hit the 200-yard mark this year, but now he’s got the chance against a Cougar pass defense that’s only allowed one touchdown pass over the last three games, but wasn’t pushed by Idaho and got run on by Oregon. The secondary is okay, not elite.

What’s Going To Happen?

Washington State will make this a lot more of a fight than Stanford will want.

The Cardinal have yet to score more than 27 points, and they’re going to need that and a whole bunch more against the real-deal Cougar attack that’ll implode in certain key moments, but overall will keep the pressure on.

After the underwhelming performance against Washington, welcome back, Christian. Welcome back, Stanford.
