Bowl and Conference Implications
Stanford can help its bowl standing and can keep hopes alive for a ten-win season. This is Rice’s final game.
What’s Going To Happen?
It’s a battle of the really, really smart, private schools, and it doesn’t matter in the overall scheme of the college football world except for one thing.
Rice allowed over 500 yards per game, having the most problems against the good passing teams, but not doing enough against the better running games, either.
In what’ll certainly be McCaffrey’s final regular season game for the Cardinal, he should be able to build on the 284-yard day against California last week and crank up his big season. Already at 1,399 yards despite missing the Notre Dame game and most of the Washington State game, he should be able to blow past the 1,500-yard mark by the end of the first half.
On the other side, can Rice keep the offense moving? On a two-game winning streak – screwing up Charlotte’s bowl hopes along the way – the attack is starting to work, and now it gets to see more of its future.
Starting Owl quarterback Tyler Stehling is out with a knee injury, and now it’s up to 6-5, 240-pound freshman Jackson Tyner to build on his good performance against UTEP.
But the defense is going to continue to be a problem. The Owls are dead last in the nation in pass efficiency defense, but again, the Cardinal won’t do much through the air.
McCaffrey will go off, Stanford will cruise, and like last year’s regular season finale against Notre Dame, the Cardinal will close out strong.
