San Diego State (3-0) vs. South Alabama (2-2) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 1
Game Time: 8:00 pm
Venue: Ladd-Peebles Stadium, Mobile, AL
Be really, really, really, really careful with this one, San Diego State.
South Alabama might be banged up, but it’s also at home with a big chance to make a massive statement after struggling way too much over the last three weeks.
Fine, so now we know the Mississippi State win was a total fluke, but the Jaguars have just enough of a passing game to keep the pressure on the Aztecs if they’re looking past this to the start of the Mountain West season.
There’s one big problem though for USA – does it have enough healthy offensive weapons to make this interesting?
Dangerous QB Dallas Davis will play, but he’s fighting through a foot problem. Meanwhile, the rushing tandem of Tyreis Thomas and Xavier Johnson are hurting, with Thomas more than just questionable.
If the San Diego State defense cares, and it’s focused, it should be able to dominate throughout, while Mr. Pumphrey should run wild on the porous Jaguar defensive front.
Donnel Pumphrey has been unstoppable so far, running for 599 yards averaging over eight yards per pop, while the Jaguars have been ripped apart by everyone’s ground game.
So why is this so dangerous for the Aztecs?
Besides the fish-out-of-water aspect, SDSU had a few too many issues on the road last week against a bad Northern Illinois team that shouldn’t have moved the ball at all. If the parts are there for USA, it should be able to get a little bit of momentum early on.
However, the injured Jaguar defensive front won’t be able to hold up. Pumphrey will be Pumphrey, and the Aztecs will make up for the defensive issues and start looking the part again.
