San Diego State (8-1) vs. Nevada (3-6) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Nov. 12
Game Time: 10:30 pm
Venue: Mackay Stadium, Reno, NV
Network: CBS Sports Network
San Diego State already has the West Division wrapped up and it’s off to the Mountain West title game, but there’s still more to play for.
Win out, do it impressively, hope for a Western Michigan loss, and the Aztecs – loss to South Alabama and all – could be off to a New Year’s Six Bowl, most likely the Cotton Bowl.
Rolling at will against the mediocre teams on their conference slate, the Aztecs and RB Donnel Pumphrey haven’t been close to challenged since that fateful day against the Jaguars. Since then, the D has shown up, allowing just 26 points over the last five games, including a brilliant performance in a 55-0 shutout over Hawaii.
But the real test is next week against Wyoming in what might be a Mountain West title preview. First, the O has to keep on rolling against a desperate Nevada team.
At 3-6, the Wolf Pack have lost three straight and now have to beat SDSU, Utah State and at UNLV to keep the season going. That’s going to be a massive problem with the second-worst run D in America giving up its second 300+ rushing day in a row – allowing 764 yards and nine scores over the last two games.
In the hunt for the Doak Walker Award, and maybe fringe Heisman love, Pumphrey will come up with 200 yards and the Aztecs keep on rolling, but Nevada’s Ty Gangi – coming off of two straight 300-yard passing games – will keep this from getting out of hand.
