Purdue (3-5) vs. Minnesota (6-2) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Nov. 5
Game Time: 3:30 pm
Venue: TCF Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, MN
It flew under the radar, but Minnesota became bowl eligible last week.
That might not seem like much, but for a program that needed to get to a bowl game last year on its Academic Progress Report, the Gopher season is already a success.
However, there’s still a whole lot more to shoot for.
It might not seem like it from a team that has no passing game, collapsed against Penn State, and almost blew a big lead against a miserable Rutgers team, but if the Gophers go 4-0 in November, they’re going to win the Big Ten West.
That’s asking a lot considering they have to go to Nebraska and Wisconsin over the next two games, before finishing up at home against Northwestern.
Purdue, on the other hand, is on a three-game losing streak and coming off a bombing from Penn State, allowing a record-setting day from the Nittany Lions in a 62-24 loss.
It hasn’t been a fun ride since the firing of Darrell Hazell, but even with all the problems, there’s still a slim, slight, desperate, outside shot at getting to a bowl game if the Boilermakers can win three of their last four games. It’s not going to happen with the way Purdue is playing, but the Northwestern and Wisconsin games are at home and the season finale against Indiana is a toss-up rivalry game.
Purdue’s defense has gotten worse, while Minnesota’s offense has become even more efficient and effective on the ground. There’s still no passing game – the Gophers have just two touchdown passes against FBS teams this year – but the points are coming in bunches, scoring 30 or more in six games this year.
Minnesota is 6-0 when putting up 30, 0-2 when scoring fewer.
Purdue allows 40 points per game.
