Purdue (2-2) vs. Illinois (1-3) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 8
Game Time: 3:30 pm
Venue: Memorial Stadium, Champaign, IL
It’s a battle to be the 14th-best team in a 14-team conference between two teams in the midst of a disaster.
Illinois can sort of be forgiven, considering it’s the first year of the Lovie Smith era and he’s in charge of changing around the entire program. It’s also more than forgivable going 0-3 vs. North Carolina, Western Michigan and Nebraska teams combining for just one Tar Heel loss to Georgia.
Purdue, on the other side, is supposed to be kicking it into high gear under Darrell Hazell, and this becomes the last chance at a win without a massive upset the rest of the way.
The Boilermakers were miserable against Maryland in a 50-7 loss, mostly due to a passing game that throws for a ton of yards, but keeps giving the ball away, along with a ground game that’s not going anywhere. Combine that with the second-worst defense in college football on third downs, and it’s been a rough go.
Illinois can’t get the offense cranked up, but despite the double-digit losses in the last three games, the defense hasn’t been totally miserable.
The line has gotten into the backfield, and LB Hardy Nickerson has played like one of the best in the Big Ten – that has to be the difference.
Purdue is desperate, but now Illinois is playing someone its own size. It’ll be a good, competitive fight with the Illini coming through with one of its few positive moments.
Chalk this up to the Lovie defense.
Purdue RB Markell Jones is hurt, and QB David Blough has to keep the picks to a minimum. That’s a problem.
