Of course it’s not the Backyard Brawl like Pitt vs. West Virginia would be, but it’s a kerfuffle.
Pitt has been stunningly awful defensively. Pat Narduzzi is a brilliant defensive coach who did wonders when he was at Michigan State, and he’ll get his Panthers rolling defensively very soon, but so far, it hasn’t found a pass play it hasn’t liked to give up – getting hit for 361 yards per game.
Fortunately for the Panthers, Marshall is almost as bad, giving up 324 passing yards per game getting ripped apart by Akron and Louisville over the last two weeks.
And fortunately for the Thundering Herd, Pitt hasn’t thrown the ball a lick.
It’s not necessarily that Nathan Peterman can’t throw, but he doesn’t do a lot of it with the running game doing such a great job. It’ll be tempting to get it all rolling against the Marshall secondary that can’t seem to come up with a stop of any sort.
Even stranger for a Herd team with a good offense is the strange and inexplicable problem on third downs. Marshall is dead last in college football on third down plays, and while the Pitt defense might be a problem, it’s actually been terrific on third downs.
The two teams will hit each other with haymakers, but it’ll be Pitt who breaks the two game losing slide with one key stop to finish it off. The Herd will get in their licks, though, with plenty of big plays and 350 passing yards from Chase Litton.
