Why Pitt Will Win

The Penn State offense wasn’t exactly humming quite yet.

It’s supposed to start doing more through the air and being more explosive under new offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead, and it was solid in the opener, just not sensational. It’s going to be a work in progress, but this Pitt D isn’t a group you play against to work out the kinks.

The Kent State defense the Nittany Lions faced is excellent – and not just by MAC standards – but the O still sputtered just enough to have to battle into the second half. The Panther defense owned the Villanova backfield with eight tackles for loss coming from all angles – Avonte Maddox and the secondary did its part getting to the quarterback, too. The game will be a grind, and the Penn State O line has to hold up. that’s not a given.

Why Penn State Will Win

The Nittany Lions have a pass rush, too.

The Panther offensive line will be a strength as the season rolls on, but it struggled in the opener against the Wildcats allowing too many plays behind the line and didn’t generate any sort of a push for the ground attack. Villanova has an okay FCS defense, but the Panthers averaged just 2.5 yards per carry and struggled to get anything going. Good luck having any more success against the Penn State defensive front, even if it’s retooling.

The Nittany Lion defensive line might be young, but it was active and showed promise. Several underclassmen made big plays, and the secondary held its own by helping to set up the offense with takeaways and stops. Against the sputtering Pitt offense, it should be more of the same.

What’s Going To Happen?

Don’t expect anything pretty. Which offensive line will be sharper and stronger? Neither one did much of anything in their respective openers, but the Penn State line might need a little more work and time before it’s up to snuff.

Even so, it’s going to come down to opportunities. Penn State’s defense will create a few more for the offense to capitalize on. Tyler Davis hit both of his field goal attempts against Kent State, and he’ll be the difference against the Panthers.
