Penn State (3-2) vs. Maryland (4-0) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 8
Game Time: 12:00 pm
Venue: Beaver Stadium, State College, PA
Why Maryland Will Win
Yeah, fine, Penn State pulled a win out of its hat late to beat Minnesota, but there are still way too many problems across the board for James Franklin’s team.
The run defense continues to get gashed – two Gopher backs ran for over 100 yards – and the offense can’t seem to consistently move the chains until it’s in desperation mode.
Maryland might not have played anyone who’s all that great, but the ground game has been unstoppable cranking out 239 yards or more every game and averaging 6.5 yards per carry.
Against the banged up Penn State linebacking corps, the young group of Terp backs should run wild with plenty of big runs there for the taking. There won’t be the 400 yards of ground game the Terps came up with against Purdue, but it should roll. This isn’t the Penn State defense of last year, and this week – again – will show it.
Why Penn State Will Win
Maryland, welcome to a decent opponent on the road.
On the good side, the Terps have had their chances to tune everything up and get everything rolling to start the D.J. Durkin era, but Howard, FIU and Purdue won’t go bowling, and the UCF game went to overtime.
And now the Nittany Lions should have a little bit of confidence.
After coming up with a great comeback win to beat Minnesota, can Penn State be that team that starts to turn a corner after struggling and sputtering throughout the first part of the season.
QB Trace McSorley has grown into a baller and a playmaker to work around. He might have thrown a bad pick in the Pitt loss, and he only completed 19-of-41 passes against Minnesota, but he bombed away for 335 yards last week and helped pull an overtime win out of the fire. The Maryland secondary has yet to be tested – McSorley will do that.
What’s Going To Happen?
Just how real is Maryland? It’s terrific, and it all starts with not screwing up.
The Terps gave away their first two turnovers of the year against Purdue, and it didn’t matter in the blowout win. The running game is too effective, the defense is playing just strong enough and aggressive enough to keep down the mediocre Penn State attack, and next week, we’re all going to be talking about Durkin’s red hot start going into the Minnesota game.
And we’ll also be talking about the James Franklin era and needing a win over Ohio State.
