It’s a whole new world for both Purdue and Penn State than it was just a short time ago.

Purdue played okay in the first game of the post-Darrell Hazell era, fighting the good fight against Nebraska on the road in a 27-14 loss. The defense held up well enough against the Huskers, but the offense couldn’t come up with a spark in the second half in Gerard Parker’s interim debut.

But there’s still hope to do something interesting, with three of the next four games at home before finishing up at Indiana. It’s too much to ask for wins in three of the last five games, but pull off the upset over Penn State, and the Boilermaker bowl hopes stay alive.

Penn State, on the other hand, is thinking much, much bigger.

With the stunning performance in the fourth quarter comeback win over Ohio State, now the Nittany Lions are deep in the Big Ten championship hunt.

If they win out – three of the next four games are on the road, but they’re against Purdue, Indiana and Rutgers, while the home dates are against Iowa and Michigan State – they’ll do no worse than finish in second place in the East. If Michigan loses twice the rest of the way, and Penn State wins out, it’s off to the Big Ten Championship.

But first, the Nittany Lions need the offense to find more pop on the ground while continuing to crank up the production on the defensive front. The line got to J.T. Barrett when it absolutely had to last week, while the secondary continues to do a fantastic job of not getting torched. It’ll give up yards here and there, but the glitches have been fixed after a rough start.

Watch out for Purdue to rise up at home and make this a fight.

The Boilermaker offense can move the chains and is great on third downs, while Penn State’s offense – the second-worst in the nation at third down conversions – gets a big break going against the nation’s worst third down D.

Penn State won’t blow it, but it’ll come close.
