Why Oregon Will Win

Can Oregon get the passing game going? It’s been okay so far, but against the Washington State secondary, it should be able to go off.

The Cougar run defense hasn’t been so hot, either, but everyone’s been having so much throwing the ball that they’ve blown off the ground attack at times.

Royce Freeman is expected to be back and ready to go – he’ll make the Duck ground attack shine without a problem – but this is Dakota Prukop’s moment. He’s only thrown one pick so far – sort of a big one against Colorado, but that’s it – and he’s been ultra-efficient, and now he gets to throw at will considering all the attention the Cougar defensive front has to pay to Freeman.

The Duck defense has to worry about Washington State QB Luke Falk, and it should have several positive moments up front. Coming from several spots in the defensive front seven – ten different Oregon players have sacks – Brady Hoke’s group can be disruptive. Throw off the timing of the Wazzu offense a little bit, and the machine breaks down.

Why Washington State Will Win

This is a nice fit opponent for the Cougars, who won last year’s game in Eugene.

Washington State isn’t like Cal, or even Mike Leach’s Texas Tech teams when it comes to time of possession. The Cougar offense does a nice job of keeping its defense off the field with third down conversion after third down conversion, and while there’s a good tempo to the attack, it’s not insane like the Oregon offense warp-speed style.

It was all good for Oregon when the offense was unstoppable and the mountain too high to climb for most offenses, but when things aren’t rocking and rolling at a whole other level – like now – the issues on defense come through.

It’s a stretch to say the Duck D gets gassed late, but Nebraska went on a key late scoring drive, and Colorado rolled 70 yards in seven plays midway through the fourth quarter to pull out the win last week. Can the offense prove it can roll for a full four quarters again?

Wazzu might have lost, but it scared the bejeebers out of Boise State with a few late touchdowns as Falk got hot in the fourth. It hung 14 on the board against Eastern Washington in the fourth, and 28 against Idaho.

What’s Going To Happen?

The rested and ready Washington State team will come our roaring.

Oregon is better, and it’s a few plays – and a few coaching braincramps – away from being winning the last two games. This week, the Cougars will love getting into a firefight with Falk throwing for well over 400 yards with a scintillating performance.

Prukop will throw for more than 300 yards, Freeman will run for over 100 yards, and it won’t be enough.
