Can anyone spare a quarterback?
Texas A&M didn’t just lose to a bad Mississippi State team, it lost QB Trevor Knight for the season – or at least until the bowl game – with a shoulder injury, while Ole Miss lost Chad Kelly for the rest of his college career with a torn ACL.
The Aggies got their share of respect from the College Football Playoff committee with a No. 4 ranking, but that all fizzled fast with a puzzling loss that ended SEC title hopes. On the plus side, they get three straight home games to close things out, and there’s still a shot at a terrific 11-win season, but the 2016 season is an opportunity missed.
The Aggies can still throw with veteran Jake Hubenak at quarterback – he’s hits 61% of his passes for 350 yards and three scores with a pick in his moments this year – but he doesn’t bring the rushing element Knight showed up with time and again.
The Ole Miss run defense continues to be a disaster, getting destroyed over the last several weeks by LSU, Auburn and Georgia Southern, and now it’s up to Trayveon Williams to start being more of a workhorse. He’s only run the ball 27 times over the last three weeks after running 28 times against Tennessee – that’s about to change.
What does the Ole Miss offense do without Kelly?
He was everything for the Rebels, and now the workload will be on Akeem Judd to do more after running for 139 yards to save the day against Georgia Southern. The rest of the Rebels have to step up and produce around Shea Patterson or Jason Pellerin under center, but the offense is still going to turn it loose. They can’t win by going conservative – the defense just isn’t good enough.
At home, Texas A&M will rally back from last week’s debacle, overcoming the loss of Knight with more pieces on both sides of the ball stepping up.
