Ole Miss vs. Memphis Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 1
Game Time: 7:00 pm
Venue: Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, Oxford, MS
Why Memphis Will Win
Okay, okay, okay, Memphis has played absolutely no one yet, but the offense has been real deal unbelievable and ready to get it on in a shootout.
Okay, okay, OKAY, it was against SE Missouri State, Kansas and Bowling Green, but considering the team lost Paxton Lynch, Riley Ferguson has been every big as fantastic throwing 11 touchdown passes and two picks – both in the opener against SEMO – as he’s cranking up the passing attack.
Granted, Ole Miss did a relatively nice job in the secondary against three top-shelf freshman quarterbacks – Deondre Francois, Jalen Hurts, and Jacob Eason – but it’s about to get bombed on by a Tiger team trying to open it up a bit.
With no turnovers in the last two games and ten takeaways, Memphis has figured out how to come up with big mistakes and capitalize on them. Considering Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly is happy to take chances, the Tiger D will be more than happy to make its share of plays.
Why Ole Miss Will Win
Again, SE Missouri State, Kansas and Bowling Green.
Not only has Memphis not played anyone, it really hasn’t played anyone.
It’s been fun and games so far, but the Rebels aren’t going to look past this game after the loss last year, and they’re certainly not going to blow this off after a 2-2 start. And that’s where Chad Kelly comes in.
He threw three picks in the opener against Florida State, but he’s been next-level brilliant ever since with eight touchdown passes, no interceptions, and several magical moments against Alabama in a wild loss, and Georgia in a dominant win.
For all the good things Memphis is doing, it’s not coming up with enough of a pass rush to bother someone like Kelly, who threw for 372 yards but two picks in last year’s loss.
On the other side, while the Rebels aren’t coming up with a ton of sacks, they’re getting behind the line and providing enough pressure to be a problem on a regular basis. For the first time all year, Ferguson and the Tigers will have to deal with getting hounded by an aggressive, talented defense.
What’s Going To Happen?
This will be a whole bunch of fun.
Both teams will bomb away in a second straight crazy shootout between the two terrific offenses, but this time it’ll be Kelly and the Rebels coming out on top. They’ll have to work for it, and they’ll have to keep balling for a full four quarters, but they’ll pull away late to finally allow everyone to take a breath.
