They’re doing it again.
Last season, Oklahoma looked vulnerable and mediocre in a loss to Texas, and then the offense kicked it all in and everything worked on the way to the Big 12 championship and a spot into the College Football Playoff.
The 1-2 start with blowout losses to Houston and Ohio State doesn’t matter too much now. The CFP hopes might be dashed – at least they’re in a deep sleep – but the Sooner offense is starting to kick it in big-time, rolling with 38 points or more in the four wins, fewer than 38 in the two losses.
Ohio State and Houston were able to take OU out of its game, but over the last few weeks the passing game starting to rip up everyone. Baker Mayfield has played every bit like the Heisman candidate he was when the season started, hitting 70% or more of his passes against everyone but Ohio State and rolling up 736 yards and seven scores in his last two games.
Mayfield’s been good. Dede Westrbrook has been better.
On a roll over his last three games – all Big 12 battles – Westbrook has caught 26 passes for 574 yards and eight touchdowns, turning into the nation’s most dangerous deep ball threat.
Texas Tech, are you ready to keep up?
Patrick Mahomes and the passing attack didn’t go anywhere against West Virginia last week, despite the 305 yards and a score. There weren’t any big deep plays, and the yards after the catch were kept to a bare minimum. But that all has to change at home.
The Mountaineers stopped Mahomes last year, too, and so did Oklahoma, keeping him to 233 yards with four picks in the 63-27 Sooner win.
The Texas Tech secondary won’t have a prayer of slowing down the Sooner passing game, the team will get flagged too often – it’s last in the nation getting nailed just under ten times per game – and there will be too many stalls.
But Oklahoma’s defense will get hit hard, too. This will be a wild shootout with both passing games clicking, but the Sooners will be hot from the first two drives on – just like they did against Kansas State.
