Oklahoma State is the lost and forgotten team in the Big 12 title chase.
It might be all about Oklahoma and West Virginia right now on a national scale, but the Cowboys control their own destiny, and the Mountaineers don’t.
If OSU beats TCU this week and at Oklahoma in two weeks, it’s the Big 12’s One True Champion. Forget about a spot in the College Football Playoff, but West Virginia – because of its loss to OSU – can’t and won’t get in, either, even if it’s 11-1 since it won’t be the league’s true champ, just a co-champion.
The Cowboys have been a whole ton of fun, winning six straight since the loss to Baylor with the offense rocking and rolling including tight wins against Kansas State and Texas Tech over the last two weeks.
And now it’s up to a rested TCU to crank up the offense to ruin the Oklahoma State title chances.
The Horned Frogs were inexplicably struggling and sputtering with losses in three games in four weeks, but they came out and roared at Baylor with a 62-22 domination in a crushing performance with everything working right.
The ground game came up with 431 yards and six scores, hitting home run after home run against the hapless Bear front seven, and now there could be more wild and crazy plays against a Cowboy defense that’s struggling.
OSU allowed 200 yards or more in a run of four games in five before facing a Texas Tech offense without a running game, and now it’s going to have a big problem as the Horned Frogs should be able to generate a decent balance to go along with a dangerous return game that should play a difference at some point.
But can Oklahoma State stop one of the hottest receivers in college football?
The Cowboys will keep this interesting, thanks to James Washington, who hit the 100-yard mark in the last three games and four of the last five games, averaging over 20 yards per catch on the year making 56 grabs for 1,132 yards and nine scores.
He’ll have a big game. OSU QB Mason Rudolph will come up with a massive performance. TCU QB Kenny Hill will put up big numbers. And everyone will rock in a wild back-and-forth game, with the Horned Frogs pulling off the wild win at home – the week off to prepare will matter.
