Why Ohio State Will Win

It’s not like the Badgers are going to suddenly find an offense after their time off.

Yeah, the defense is tough. Yeah, this is a sound team that does a lot of things right. However, it’s also a fatally flawed team.

The ground game only sort of works, and it’s not doing anything against the good run defenses. BYU was able to run wild on Michigan State, but Wisconsin only came up with 122 yards and was stuffed by Michigan with just 71 yards.

The punting game is mediocre, the kicking game is a problem with a newbie handling the work, and the passing attack isn’t there to mount any semblance of a comeback if the Buckeyes can just get up early.

It’s going to be all about patience, patience and patience. Consider it a good thing that OSU had to struggle a bit against Indiana, because it started to figure out ways to make things happen as the game went on. The team needed to face a little bit of adversity, and as long as it doesn’t panic if this is tight in the second half, it should be fine.

Ohio State is far faster, far more athletic, and far more talented. LSU was all those things against Wisconsin, too, and it showed with the explosive pick six for a score to get back into the game when the offense wasn’t working. The Buckeye offense should be able to work as long as the ball comes out of J.T. Barrett’s hands in a hurry – that’s what the offense has been building for all year so far.

Why Wisconsin Will Win

Yeah, Barrett can spread the ball around well and get the ball in the hands of his playmakers, but the Badger defense is masterful at keeping the yards after contact to a bare minimum. Can Barrett bomb away deep to push the Wisconsin secondary? Michigan was able to do that just enough to break the dam, but if the Buckeyes try to run, or try to hustle up the tempo a bit with quick-hitting short plays, there will be problems against this linebacking corps.

The two weeks off to rest up will do wonders. This was a beaten up, battered team coming off the dogfight against Michigan, and it needed the break and it needed the practice time. Will that matter against the speed and flash of the Buckeyes? If the lines can hold up, absolutely.

And it should help a defensive front seven that should be able to come up the pass defense Indiana showed last week.

The Buckeye offense was just off against the Hoosiers, but IU also did a nice job of keeping everything in front of them even though they didn’t generate much of a pass rush. OSU had to resort to running Barrett over and over again, and while that worked against the Hoosiers, forget about it against this Badger bunch.

You beat Wisconsin with the deep ball, not with a running quarterback. The Badgers have to hold tough on D, take advantage of every opportunity on O, and feed off the ground in what needs to be an ugly, dogfight of a battle.

What’s Going To Happen?

When last we saw these two play, Ohio State came up with an all-timer of a 59-0 beatdown in the 2014 Big Ten Championship to propel the Buckeyes to the College Football Playoff.

While the Buckeyes have the ability and the talent to do that all over again, it’s not going to happen. Wisconsin will look great defensively, swarming around Barrett and Mike Weber while forcing the Buckeyes to start pressing a bit.

If you thought Wisconsin was ultra-conservative before, it’ll be extra careful this week against the attacking Buckeye D that makes a living off of making other teams screw up. There won’t be any running game, but Wisconsin will own the field position battle in the second half to squeak out a classic at home.

Wisconsin will bring Ohio State down to its level, and while it might not be aesthetically pleasing, it’ll look great for Bucky.
