Why Rutgers Will Win

It never seems to work out when an ex-coach knows his old team, and Ohio State is a whole lot different than last year, but for whatever it’s worth, Rutgers head man Chris Ash is more than just a little familiar with what’s coming after serving the last two years as the Buckeye defensive coordinator.

The Scarlet Knight defense is starting to show just how good it could potentially be under Ash, overcoming a rough first game to clamp down over the last three weeks, giving Iowa a nightmare of a time in last week’s 14-7 loss. The secondary has been solid, the run defense just good enough at keeping backs from busting through to the second level and tearing off big runs, and the pass rush has been terrific.

Steady into the backfield on a regular basis, Rutgers will make its share of plays against a quick-hitting Ohio State offense that tries to get the ball moving fast. This is an aggressive, attacking D that doesn’t miss stops and does a great job in the red-zone – this is a bend-but-not-really-break group that holds up well.

Oklahoma included, there’s a chance this is the best defense the Buckeyes have faced.

Why Ohio State Will Win

Yeah, Rutgers’ D might be solid, but the O did nothing in the two games against decent defenses.

It’s no coincidence that the Scarlet Knights are -3 in turnover margin against Washington and Iowa and + 1 against New Mexico and Howard, and it’s also no coincidence that the offense failed when it needed to do something, anything in key moments against the Huskies and Hawkeyes.

Rutgers had no downfield passing game to begin with, and now it’s going to be absolutely stagnant with leading receiver – by far – Janarion Grant out for the year with an ankle injury.

First, this isn’t the defense to go against if you care about turnover margin. The Greg Schiano defense is a takeaway machine, pouncing on every opportunity and creating its own chances time and again.

Second, this isn’t the defense to go against if you have no ability to open it up. The Buckeyes have yet to allow a rushing score this season, and with two weeks to rest up, should be a half-click faster around the midrange Rutgers passing game that can’t go up top.

What’s Going To Happen?

Ohio State has yet to hit any sort of a rut, but it might be looking a bit back at Oklahoma and a little bit ahead to Wisconsin – this is supposed to be a speedbump game. The Rutgers defense will fight the good fight, but it won’t get any help whatsoever from the punchless offense.
