Why Ohio State Will Win
Will the win over Wisconsin charge up the Buckeyes?
That was the one big nasty game they seemed to know they needed to get past – at least that’s how everyone acted – and they proved they could get physical, they proved they could handle an insane road environment, and they proved they could come back and win in the clutch.
Penn State doesn’t have the run defense to hold up if Ohio State tries to line up and blast away. Curtis Samuel had some success against the Badgers, but Mike Weber was limited to just 46 yards on 11 carries. This is the week the Buckeyes need him to go off and be even more of a workhorse than he’s been so far.
The Penn State defensive front has been better in recent weeks, but can it handle the power? Probably not, and it’ll struggle to get its own ground attack moving. Wisconsin was able to rise up and get the running game working, but the Nittany Lions don’t have the talent on the offensive front.
Run the ball, win third downs on D, don’t give Penn State any easy chances – it should be a simple formula for the Buckeyes to survive.
But on the flip side …
Why Penn State Will Win
Will the win over Wisconsin be too taxing for the Buckeyes?
That was as physical and as tough a game as anyone’s played all season long, and while it was a great moment for OSU, are they beaten up?
The Badgers came out refreshed and sharp with two weeks to prepare for the Buckeyes, with a few interesting wrinkles and great fight in the first half. Considering OSU struggled to put away Indiana a few weeks early, there’s a chance they’re starting to hit a wee bit of a wall. The downfield passing game isn’t working like it should, and they’ve had to rely on J.T. Barrett to bail them out way too much.
Penn State’s run defense might have a bit of a problem thanks to a devastated linebacking corps, but the secondary has done its part and should be able to lock down everything deep.
Offensively, they have just enough talent at the skill spots and just enough offensive pop to keep pushing if there’s any sort of a letdown effect for OSU and if Trace McSorley can get hot early. To win, the Penn State quarterback has to outplay the Heisman-candidate Ohio State quarterback – McSorley has to come up with the game of his life, especially on …
What’s Going To Happen?
Third downs. And that’s the problem.
Penn State is miserable defensively at getting off the field, and it all ties into the problems and concerns. Ohio State will win first and second downs, and third down will be a breeze against this D.
Control the clock against a Nittany Lion team that holds the ball for just 27 minutes a game – Ohio State is ninth in the nation in time of possession – and rely on the defense that won’t be taxed too hard throughout the game. The Buckeyes will get past a sluggish first quarter to get out with a convincing win.
