Why Indiana Will Win
The Hoosiers are really and truly producing on … defense?
The offense has been terrific over the last few years under head coach Kevin Wilson, but Indiana being Indiana, the defense has routinely been among the worst in the Big Ten. While this isn’t Alabama in Bloomington, the Hoosiers have been good enough to get by – especially last week against Michigan State.
Last year, the run D was gashed for over five yards per pop, but so far this season it’s giving up just 3.7 yards per carry and held firm for a pedestrian 175 yards and no scores against the Spartans.
But to pull this off, or at least just keep it close, the IU passing game has to open it up and has to keep the mistakes to a minimum. QB Richard Lagow has to play out of his mind, and he’s got to keep cranking out over ten yards per pass to open things up a bit. No one’s been able to push the Buckeye defense deep – including Baker Mayfield – but IU has the ability to at least give it a try. However, Lagow can’t give away …
Why Ohio State Will Win
As good as Lagow has been, he’s not above making mistakes. His five picks against Wake Forest were a killer in a game the Hoosiers should’ve won in a walk, and last week he gave away one.
IU will have to press, push, and take several chances, and that’s a problem against an Ohio State defense that started out the year a +9 in turnover margin in three games. Last week was the first time it was a -1, but that’s partly because Rutgers quarterbacks couldn’t throw from their backs.
Everything has to go right for IU, and OSU is good enough to make certain it won’t.
On the other side, the Buckeye running game is starting to kick it in at just the right time. Rutgers has a better defense than it showed last week – Ohio State ripped through it like tissue paper.
Mike Weber has rushed for over 100 yards in three of the first four games – with a 92-yard day against Tulsa – and destroyed the Scarlet Knights with 144 yards and a touchdown on just 14 carries.
What’s Going To Happen?
Last year the Hoosiers scared the hell out of the Buckeyes in a 34-27 IU loss. That was a fun, wild, entertaining game that needed OSU to push hard to survive. That won’t be the case this time around.
Indiana really is good – this might be Wilson’s best team yet – but a few key turnovers will be the difference. After going last week without a takeaway, the Buckeye defense will make up for it.
