Notre Dame (4-6) vs. Virginia Tech (7-3) Game Preview

Game Time: 3:30 pm
Venue: Notre Dame Stadium, Notre Dame, IN
How much does Notre Dame really care? How much does it really want to make its season something positive?
It showed last week that it hasn’t quit, destroying a solid Army 44-6, when an unfocused team wouldn’t have had it so easy against the Black Knight option offense. Now the year is still alive, and while going bowling might not seem like that big a deal, beating Virginia Tech and USC would turn around the narrative in an otherwise lost year.
But are the Fighting Irish good enough?
The offense continues to be okay, and the defense is only giving up 372 yards per game, but turnovers and other ill-time mistakes have been a problem time and again.
The lines haven’t been good enough, and the consistency hasn’t been there on either side of the ball.
Speaking of inconsistent, welcome to the 2016 Virginia Tech Hokies.
Head coach Justin Fuente has done a wonderful job in his first year at the helm, and he’s a win away against Virginia from going to the ACC title game, but with distant College Football Playoff hopes still alive, the team couldn’t handle the Georgia Tech option offense in a tough loss last week.
The Hokies have been good enough to drill Miami and North Carolina, and just flaky enough to get rolled by Syracuse.
This game doesn’t matter to the overall picture of the Virginia Tech season, but obviously beating Notre Dame is always going to matter. In terms of momentum, it would be a positive, but in reality, the Hokies would be better off resting everyone for Virginia and, potentially, Clemson for the ACC title game. Of course, that’s not going to happen.
The Hokie secondary can be beaten, despite what the stats might say.
Syracuse and Miami threw at will, and East Carolina cranked up a big day – and now it’s DeShone Kizer’s turn.
He’s been better than he’s being given credit for, throwing for over 200 yards in each of the last three games with eight touchdowns and one pick, overcoming the bad performance against Stanford to settle down and look the part again.
He’ll have to deal with the Hokie pass rush, but he’ll be sharp enough to make this his game as Notre Dame closes out the ugly home portion of the season with a nice win to keep bowl hopes alive.
