Why Nevada Will Win

Just how quickly can Notre Dame get past the Texas loss? That wasn’t just a heartbreaking double-overtime defeat, it was a brutally physical battle on a Sunday night – it’s a short week for the Fighting Irish.

The run defense was softened up by the Longhorns and all their beefy runners, and as well as the line adjusted and the linebackers did as the game went on, the last thing this group will want to deal with is a dangerous and potentially explosive ground game.

It wasn’t a stellar Week One for Nevada, but the running backs are in place in the Pistol offense to add a little bit of flash – James Butler ran for 123 yards and two scores against Cal Poly – while Tyler Stewart is a solid, veteran quarterback with good accuracy and mobility. If those two can get into a groove right away, the Wolf Pack offense should go on its share of long, effective drives.

There’s one problem, though …

Why Notre Dame Will Win

It took overtime for Nevada to get by Cal Poly.

The Mustangs did a good enough job against the Nevada offense to bend, but not break – how did an FCS team hang so tough with a potential Mountain West contender? The running game. Their quirky offense blew through the awful Nevada defensive front for almost 400 yards while controlling the ball and the clock for over 36 minutes. Notre Dame should be able to pound away to its heart’s content.

Nevada’s secondary is the strength, but it’s still not all that great. DeShone Kizer is the talk of the NFL scouting world after the way he held up and balled against the strong Texas secondary, and he should be able to carve up the Pack – but he’s not going to need to.

Tarean Folston is a mortal lock for 100 yards, and Josh Adams should find more room to move after running for 43 yards on 11 carries in Austin. The Notre Dame O line will flatten the Nevada defensive front.

What’s Going To Happen?

Yeah, Notre Dame might be coming off as tough a loss as anyone dealt with in Week One, and yeah, Michigan State might be coming up. Expect a big bounceback anyway. The Irish will be more physical from the start, overcoming the loss by blasting away on a Nevada front seven that’ll give up more than five yards a crack.
