Northwestern can’t blow the layups.
It got hot for a month to turn the season around, and then, predictably, lost to Ohio State and Wisconsin in a few good fights. Now the real work has to be done to close strong and become bowl eligible, with Purdue this week and Illinois next week before finishing up with Minnesota.
The offense has relied on Clayton Thorson and the passing game – with 52 passes against the Badgers last week and 96 over the last three games – while the defense has done a solid job of keeping the big plays to a minimum. Wisconsin came up with one, big, perfectly executed pass play, but that was about it – the Wildcat D held up well.
The Purdue D has fallen off the map.
It was never a rock, but over the last month it’s given up 44 points or more in three of the last four games, getting bombed by Penn State in a 62-24 loss, and last week couldn’t hold up in a 44-31 loss to Minnesota.
The Boilermaker defensive front has been crushed, allowing 235 rushing yards or more in five of the last six games, and allowing ten touchdowns in the last two games. And now it’ll be time for Justin Jackson to roll.
Held back a bit with the offense revolving around Thorson, Jackson hasn’t hit the 100-yard mark in any of the last three games. He tore through Purdue as a freshman with 147 yards and two scores, and last year ran for 116 yards and a touchdown in the win.
He’ll crank up a huge game, the Wildcat offense will dominate in the second half, and it’ll be on to the Illinois game for a shot at going bowling.
