Bowl and Conference Implications
Northern Illinois is out of the bowl hunt, but it can finish tied for third in the MAC West with a win. Kent State can finish no worse than tied for fourth in the MAC East with a win, but it’s out of the bowl picture, too.
What’s Going To Happen?
It’s been a rough run for both teams in wildly disappointing seasons. Kent State wasn’t supposed to contend for the MAC title, but it’s lost close game after close game, and now the wheels are coming off.
The Golden Flashes lost four games by five points or fewer, with yet another punchless offense not taking advantage of yet another good year from the D. However, with injuries across the offensive board, and with star safety Nate Holley suspended for a major off-the-field issue, the team didn’t even show up last week in a 42-7 loss to a bad Bowling Green team.
Northern Illinois hasn’t had any luck with injuries in the offensive backfield, but Jordan Huff came through last week with 173 yards and three touchdowns in the overtime win over Eastern Michigan, and he’ll have to do it again with the O down to its fourth QB – Daniel Santacterina – after Ryan Graham left the game last week with an apparent concussion.
As good as the Kent State defense has been, the run D has been just okay. NIU isn’t going to do anything fancy, and even though its own defense is a problem, it’ll run, keep running, and hope the Golen Flash O stays miserable for just one more week.
