Northern Illinois (0-4) vs. Ball State (3-1) Game Preview
Date: Saturday, Oct. 1
Game Time: 3:30 pm
Venue: Scheumann Stadium, Muncie, IN
Ball State has done a terrific job so far under new head coach Mike Neu. The offense has a physical presence, the defense has been tough, and while the opposition hasn’t been anything stellar, being 3-1 at Ball State is a big deal – the team is playing well.
And then there’s Northern Illinois.
The perennial MAC powerhouse has been a puzzling disaster, starting out awful losing to a bad Wyoming team, and bottoming out last week in a home loss to an FCS team. Western Illinois might be an excellent FCS team, but it’s an FCS team.
The Huskie defense is failing time and again in key situations, and the running game isn’t bailing the team out. Opposing offenses are going on too many long, sustained drives, and doing all the things NIU is supposed to be doing.
Ball State is holding on to the ball, it’s not committing penalties, it’s running strongly and efficiently, and it’s not having problems defensively getting off the field.
NIU is the exact opposite right now.
