The Tar Heels are trying to stay alive in the Coastal, ACC, and College Football Playoff chase, needing to keep winning, and needing a Virginia Tech ACC loss along the way.

The Hokies have just Georgia Tech and Virginia left in conference play. Lose one, and the door is open for the Tar Heels to take over, needing to win their two ACC rivalry dates against Duke and NC State to get to the ACC title game. Win that a 11-2, and the CFP is on the table.

UNC rebounded from the blowout loss to the Hokies with the offense going a decent job in a three-game winning streak, but it’s the defense that’s taken over with a terrific run. After giving up 23 points or more in each of the first six games, the Heels have allowed 20 or fewer in the three wins. Match that up with the red-hot play of QB Mitch Trubisky, and it’s all working.

Trubisky threw two picks in the rain soaked, not-really-his-fault loss to Virginia Tech. He hasn’t thrown an interception against anyone else, with 19 touchdown passes on the year while hitting 70% of his passes.

The Tar Heels are 7-0 when Trubisky throws a scoring pass, 0-2 when he doesn’t.

But the Duke secondary has improved after a rough first half of the season.

On a three-game losing streak, the Blue Devils have to win out to go bowling – or win two more and hope the Academic Progress Report plays a role. This is the last home date of the year, and they need it with Pitt and Miami to close.

The team just can’t seem to catch a break in tight battles, losing by three to Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech over the last few weeks, but they’ll have to crank up the offense to keep up with the Heels, needing to get the running game going against the soft UNC defensive front.

It won’t be enough.

The rivalry aspect will keep this close, but the Tar Heels are a machine right now. They just need the Virginia Tech break to really show what they can do.
