Will the real North Carolina please stand up?
The Tar Heels don’t have much of a defense, but the toughness showed up against Miami last week in a brilliant win to do the near impossible and beat the Canes and Florida State in the same season. Wrap that around a rain-soaked home blowout to Virginia Tech, and it’s been a strange first month of the ACC season – but the Heels are still alive.
The Hokie loss to Syracuse was massive to change up the Coastal chase, and beating Miami on the road means everything to UNC, but there can’t be a misfire this week.
Yeah, Georgia Tech will be interesting, going to Duke is always tough for the rivalry game, and NC State is outstanding, but there’s no reason the Tar Heels can’t win out. First, they can’t miss the layup against the Cavaliers.
Virginia fought the good fight in a shootout loss to Pitt last week at home, and now it needs this second of three straight home games – and four in five games – with Louisville up next.
The Cav passing game has been terrific, but you beat North Carolina with a running game – Virginia doesn’t have one – and a tough, hard-nosed defense – that doesn’t exist, either.
The Virginia defense gives up passing yards in chunks, and it’s about to get carved up by Mitch Trubisky and a UNC O that got back on track last week. Again, blame the Virginia Tech problems on the rain, but now, in five of the last six games, Trubisky has connected on 71% or more of his passes, getting to the 400-yard mark in three straight games.
Virginia’s passing game will work, but the depleted secondary hit hard by injuries is about to get lit up like a Christmas tree.
