Neither team looked remotely close to being in the bowl chase a few weeks ago, and then a funny thing happened along the way – they each started to crank up the offense.

All hope appeared to be lost for a dead-looking New Mexico team that collapsed against New Mexico State and couldn’t get by Rutgers, but the 2-3 start was overcome by a brilliant day against Air Force in Dallas to turn everything around.

The nation’s No. 1 ground game has been unstoppable, coming up with over 400 yards three times and with a 476-yard, five score day against ULM last week hitting home run after home run on the ground.

Can Hawaii handle the high-powered Lobo attack at home?

The Rainbow Warriors have won three of the last four, but threw in an inexplicable home gaffe to UNLV just to keep them honest. Now it’s up to the run defense to hold up, which might be a slight problem after not handling the Air Force ground game last week all that well and allowing over five yards per carry. The defensive front is going to have issues, but the passing game has to make up for it.

Forgetting about the two picks the Lobos came up with last week, the pass defense has been a rumor throughout the year against teams trying to bomb away to keep up the pace. And that’ll be the problem this week against Dru Brown, who’s coming off a 312-yard, three-score day and with two touchdown passes or more in each of his last four games.

Hawaii will come up with its share of plays behind the line – the linebacking corps is active enough to load up into the backfield at times – but New Mexico is too good and too effective right now on the ground.

Hawaii will come close, but the Lobos will grind out the final drive they need to survive.
