Bowl and Conference Implications
This is it. This is the equivalent of their bowl games. UNLV, though, can potentially finish tied for second in the Mountain West’s West division, while Nevada could finish tied with the Rebels for third.
What’s Going To Happen?
It’s an under-the-radar rivalry that both programs point to as a must-win to keep the fan base happy.
For UNLV head coach Tony Sanchez, a win could be a spring board. This, combined with the stunning and thrilling three overtime win over Wyoming a few weeks ago, would send the Rebels into the offseason on a high note in a needle-is-pointing-up sort of a way.
For Nevada head man Brian Polian, it’s been a disastrous season with a total collapse over the second half. However, last week’s win over Utah State, combined with a win to take the Fremont Cannon, might be enough to calm down the hot seat.
UNLV has put together a nice running game, and it continues to need it with star receiver Devonte Boyd out for the year and with the No. 2 receiver – TE Andrew Price – with just 16 grabs on the year.
Fortunately for the Rebels, they’re going against the nation’s worst run defense.
Nevada’s offense hasn’t been the high-powered Pistol-loving attack of the past, but the bigger problem is a defensive front that can’t come up with a third down stop – it’s dead last in the nation allowing teams to convert 52% of their chances – while the run defense is getting hit for over 300 yards a game.
As flaky as UNLV has been, it’s got the offense at home to crank up the ground attack and keep it rolling all game long. Nevada will have its moments and will stay in the game, but it’ll get killed on time of possession.
