Bowl and Conference Implications

North Carolina wins the Coastal and will play Clemson for the ACC Championship with a win and a Virginia Tech loss to Virginia. There’s an outside chance at slipping into the Orange Bowl with a dominant win, a Virginia Tech collapse, and an ugly Louisville loss to Kentucky. NC State needs a win to become bowl eligible.

What’s Going To Happen?

Is this a program-defining moment for NC State?

Head coach Dave Doeren has been fine, but a loss would be the end of an epic second half collapse and would be the sixth loss in the last seven games. It would mean the Wolfpack wouldn’t go bowling, it would be a key loss to the rival, and it would be an ugly end to a disappointing year that could’ve and should’ve been so much stronger.

North Carolina might be dreaming the dream of going back to the ACC Championship, but that hope might have been dashed a few weeks ago with the stunning loss to Duke. Even so, a win would not just mean a ninth win with a shot at a ten-win campaign after the bowl, but it would stick the dagger into its rival’s season.

Mitch Trubisky and the UNC passing game has been stellar all season long, and it’ll have to be against a NC State defensive front that’s been a terror against the run. The Pack might be inconsistent on the other side of the ball, but the D has been terrific against everyone but Louisville – and now it’ll have to carry the O if it’s not rolling on the ground.

Everyone’s running game is going off on the Tar Heel defensive front, but that’s sort of not fair, at least statistically. UNC had to face option attacks against Georgia Tech and Citadel in the last three weeks. Now it’ll have to get ready for a steady diet of Matthew Dayes in what might be his final game.

The NC State back passed the 1,000-yard mark last week, and after missing last year’s game against the Tar Heels, he’ll be fed the ball over and over and over again. Considering UNC might never have the ball – it’s last in the nation in time of possession – it’ll have to take advantage of its opportunities on offense, and Trubisky will.

It’ll be a close, tight battle throughout, but the Tar Heels will break State’s heart with a field goal in the final moments to pull out a thriller.

And then all eyes will be on Blacksburg on Saturday.
