Why East Carolina Will Win
The Pirates looked absolutely fantastic in the opener against Western Carolina, and while, of course, it was Western Carolina, it was exactly how the offense should look bombing away at will and doing whatever the attack wanted to do. Thank you, Philip Nelson.
The controversial Minnesota transfer was nearly perfect, completing 28-of-32 passes for 398 yards and five scores, and he even ran for a touchdown looking like the exact leader for what should be a high-powered Pirate attack. Is the NC State secondary good enough to hold up? It’s going to be okay, but it’s about to be tested and pushed as the Pirates spread out the offense getting plenty of key parts involved. Nelson is a veteran who knows what he’s doing.
Why NC State Will Win
The NC State offense looked absolutely fantastic, too. The Wolfpack needed Boise State transfer Ryan Finley to be a factor, and he was nearly perfect completing 17-of-21 passes for 174 yards and two scores, pushing past Jalen McClendon to settle the quarterback derby, at least for now. Now the Pack has its guy, and he’s not going to make a whole slew of big mistakes. He’s not going to give ECU anything cheap.
He’s not going to have to do it all by himself. Matthew Dayes and the rushing attack should carry the workload against the aggressive, but just okay ECU defensive front, and Finley isn’t going to have to press. The Pirate linebackers aren’t a strength, and while they’ll make plenty of tackles, they’ll get dinked and dunked on, and they’ll be run on by the deep group of Pack backs.
What’s Going To Happen?
Expect a terrific game. Both quarterbacks will be rock-solid, and while they’re not going to be as sharp as they were against their overmatched opponents in their respective shootouts, they’ll be good enough to keep offenses moving.
The NC State defensive line will be the difference. The Pack will be able to run, and ECU won’t. That’ll be the difference as the game rolls on.
