NC State 28, North Carolina 21: What Does It All Mean?

Virginia Tech takes the Coastal

The Virginia game now doesn’t matter for Virginia Tech, and it doesn’t matter if there turns out to be a four-way tie between Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Miami and Pitt – the Hokies are playing Clemson for the ACC title. The door was open for the Tar Heels late in the year, but they blew it losing to Duke and NC State.

NC State is bowl eligible

This was really, really, really big for NC State and for head coach Dave Doeren. A loss would’ve meant a total collapse, dropping six of the last seven games to miss out on a bowl. Instead, the Pack will go bowling, the regular season closes with a win over the arch-rival, and the team looked solid doing it.

This chills out Larry Fedora coaching carousel rumors

With everything happening in the coaching community, Fedora has been talked about as the next-coach up to replace a guy who might replace a guy. The run defense continues to be a problem, the team got down too fast, and the team lost to its rival in two of the last three games. You don’t make people happy at North Carolina when you lose to North Carolina State and Duke.

Mitch Trubisky didn’t hurt himself

The red-hot pro prospect – and the No. 1 overall prospect in some circles – Mitch Trubisky started out slow, but with the team behind, he started to look the part with the mobility to run for 55 yards and the form and function late to finish with 280 yards and three scores with no picks. UNC lost, but this is on the run D, not the QB.

Matthew Dayes closes out a terrific regular season

Under the national radar, the NC State senior running back finished up the regular season with over 1,100 rushing yards and eight 100-yard games, with three in the last four games. He didn’t carry the offense, but he was the steadying force early on against the Tar Heels, finishing with 104 yards and two scores on 26 carries. The NC State O line did its job – the Pack finished with 259 rushing yards and three scores – but Dayes was the catalyst to saving the season. And now he gets one more game.
