Mountain West Week 2 Rankings, Predictions & Quick Takes
How are the Mountain West picks so far? SU: 21-3, ATS: 4-10
1. Boise State (2-0)
Final Score: Boise State 31, Washington State 28
Prediction: Boise State 45, Washington State 34, Boise State -12
Up Next: at Oregon State
Quick Take: The Broncos did everything it could to give away the game with awful plays down the stretch, two bad picks, and a secondary that got ripped apart, but they managed be outscrewed up by Washington State. Brett Rypien has to be sharper and more decisive, but when he wasn’t getting the job done, Jeremy McNichols saved the day with 116 yards and two scores. As rough as this was, Boise State might be a win over Oregon State next week away from going unbeaten.
2. San Diego State (2-0)
Final Score: San Diego State 45, California 40
Prediction: San Diego State 31, California 17, SDSU -7
Up Next: at Northern Illinois
Quick Take: The defense that’s among the stingiest in the country came up with a stop when it absolutely had to have it – you don’t throw at Damontae Kazee – but along the way, it gave up 522 yards and five scores to Davis Webb getting pushed hard all game long. Fortunately, Donnel Pumphrey came up with an all-timer of a performance with 281 yards and three scores. The Aztecs beat the Pac-12 team on the slate – they’ll take it.
3. Air Force (2-0)
Final Score: Air Force 48, Georgia State 14
Prediction: Air Force 45, Georgia State 20, Air Force -18
Up Next: at Utah State (Sept. 24)
Quick Take: That’s exactly how it’s supposed to work. The Falcons held on to the ball for over 45 minutes, converted 13-of-19 third down chances, and running for 464 yards. The Air Force D was just okay, but it didn’t have to be on the field – Georgia State came up with just six first downs.
4. Utah State (1-1)
Final Score: USC 45, Utah State 7
Prediction: USC 31, Utah State 17, USC -16.5
Up Next: Arkansas State
Quick Take: Unfortunately, Utah State had to deal with a focused USC team looking for a little redemption after the clunker against Alabama. Kent Myers was okay with the short-range passing game, but there wasn’t any running game whatsoever after losing RB Devante Mays to a leg injury – the Trojans were swarming.
5. Nevada (1-1)
Final Score: Notre Dame 39, Nevada 10
Prediction: Notre Dame 37, Nevada 17, Notre Dame -28
Up Next: Buffalo
Quick Take: The problem wasn’t with Nevada getting crushed by a good Notre Dame team, it’s that the O didn’t show any identity. The offensive style is supposed to be a difference-maker because of its style, but the ground game went nowhere against a motivated Irish defensive front and Tyler Stewart had his second straight bad passing game. The Wolf Pack QB combined to hit just 12-of-26 throws for 201 yards and a pick.
6. Wyoming (1-1)
Final Score: Nebraska 52, Wyoming 17
Prediction: Nebraska 45, Wyoming 17, Nebraska -24.5
Up Next: UC Davis
Quick Take: Six turnovers, no running game, and meltdowns in the secondary. This was a close game for three quarters with chances to make it interesting, but the Cowboys couldn’t stop screwing up with Josh Allen giving it up over and over again. The Huskers bottled up Brian Hill – 49 yards on 17 carries – and Allen couldn’t make any magic this week.
7. San Jose State (1-1)
Final Score: San Jose State 66, Portland State 35
Prediction: Portland State 38, San Jose State 35
Up Next: Utah
Quick Take: That’s a terrific FCS team that San Jose State just dominated. Kenny Potter was on his game all night throwing for 233 yards and three scores to go along with two rushing touchdowns, while the defense was terrific at providing the opportunities forcing six turnovers. After the way the Spartans played against Tulsa, this was a fantastic turnaround.
8. Colorado State (1-1)
Final Score: Colorado State 23, UTSA 14
Prediction: Colorado State 45, UTSA 17, CSU -12
Up Next: Northern Colorado
Quick Take: Uh oh. The Colorado game that was such a nightmare didn’t get any better offensively against UTSA. The Rams got nothing out of the passing game with Faton Bauta and Collin Hill combining to compete 8-of-23 passes for 108 yards. The running game might have taken care of the Roadrunners, but there’s a big, big problem – Colorado State doesn’t have a passing attack. On the plus side, the defensive front rolled – UTSA finished with -1 rushing yard.
9. UNLV (1-1)
Final Score: UCLA 42, UNLV 21
Prediction: UCLA 41, UNLV 17, UCLA -26
Up Next: at Central Michigan
Quick Take: Could Johnny Stanton prove he was ready for the big stage? Not quite yet with an 11-of-28, 153-yard day with a score and two picks. However, the Rebels hung around into the fourth quarter with a good running day from Lexington Thomas along with Stanton doing a nice job of getting the O moving with his legs. UNLV isn’t there yet to beat UCLA on the road, but it provided a push.
10. New Mexico (1-1)
Final Score: New Mexico State 32, New Mexico 31
Prediction: New Mexico 41, New Mexico State 17, New Mexico -12
Up Next: at Rutgers
Quick Take: Completely and totally inexcusable. The Lobos finally seemed to have control in the fourth quarter, and then it was supposed to be time for the ground game to take over and put it away. Instead, the Aggies made it happen with ten unanswered points to potentially crush the UNM season before it gets started. Austin Apodaca couldn’t throw well, hitting just 12-of-23 passes, and the running game never seemed to get its groove back after taking a big early lead.
11. Fresno State (1-1)
Final Score: Fresno State 31, Sacramento State 3
Prediction: Fresno State 42, Sacramento State 17
Up Next: at Toledo
Quick Take: Finally, Fresno State has something positive to build off of. The defense did its part allowing just 185 yards of Hornet offense and coming up with two takeaways. Chason Virgil might have missed way too many throws, but he also came up with two scoring passes. It wasn’t a thing of beauty – it was 10-3 in the fourth, but the Bulldogs got a win and the O moved the ball. For now, that’s good enough.
12. Hawaii (1-2)
Final Score: Hawaii 41, UT Martin 36
Prediction: Hawaii 31, UT Martin 17
Up Next: at Arizona
Quick Take: Three catches, three touchdowns for Marcus Kemp. The Rainbow Warriors needed them – and the four takeaways from the defense – to overcome the rough day against a game UT Martin offense. The mistakes from the Skyhawks saved the day, but Hawaii got a win to finally have something positive go its way.
