All of a sudden, the South Carolina season isn’t looking so bad.

The Gamecocks still have the lowest-scoring offense in the country, the defense can’t really stop the run, and getting first downs has been like pulling teeth at times, but it appears to have found something in QB Jake Bentley, who’s hit 70% of his throws for 368 yards and four scores with no picks in his two games of service. Beating UMass was no big deal, but he held up well and got the job done against Tennessee last week, effectively ending the Vols’ season.

Now, a bowl bid is on the table. Win this week, and with a layup against Western Carolina coming up soon – forget about the road dates at Florida and Clemson – Will Muschamp will have taken a massive step in his first year in Columbia.

Things aren’t as well in the other Columbia.

Missouri has lost four straight, marred by absolutely no consistency whatsoever. The Tigers lost the two home games they couldn’t – Middle Tennessee and Kentucky – and now only have one win this season against an FBS team.

Can the Mizzou passing game finally get rolling again? South Carolina’s secondary has been a relative strength, picking off ten passes while allowing just nine touchdown passes. Most of all, it’s not giving up too many deep balls. It’s possible to dink and dunk on the Gamecocks, but it takes way too much effort to have that translate into production.

The South Carolina defense has been great at keeping scores down by owning field position and shockingly dominating in the red zone – this D will do a whole lot of bending, though.

It’s not going to be a thing of beauty, but the Gamecocks will be able to run effectively for one of the few times this year, once again, the defense will hold its own when it has to.

Missouri has one of the nation’s worst red zone offenses – get ready for too many stalled drives in a frustrating game.
