Break up the Eagles. The perennial national doormat of an Eastern Michigan ripped apart Mississippi Valley 61-14 thanks to a swarming run defense that owned the game from the start and a massive game from Shaq Vann and his 156 of the team’s 281 rushing yards.

And now comes reality.

A disappointment in head coach Barry Odom’s debut, Mizzou didn’t show any real improvement on an offense that sputtered and coughed all throughout last year. Worse yet, the defense didn’t show up allowing almost 500 yards in the 26-11 loss to West Virginia.

With Georgia up next, the Eastern Michigan game has to be when everything gets right.

This is a veteran, deep EMU team with a legitimate defensive line – led by the terrific Pat O’Connor – and just enough talent to throw a scare into the Tiger fans if Drew Lock and the offense doesn’t start figuring out how to turn yards into points. Missouri moved the ball on the Mountaineers, but they didn’t have enough to show for it.

The pass rush will be back, the D will be camped behind the line, and Lock will show far better accuracy than he did in Morgantown. For a moment, Missouri will look like it’s ready to bounceback as a program.

Playing Eastern Michigan tends to do that.
