Mississippi State (2-5) vs. Samford (6-1) Game Preview

Game Time: 3:30 pm
Venue: Davis Wade Stadium, Starkville, MS
Network: SEC Network
It’s Bulldog on Bulldog action, and the Bulldogs are going to have to fight.
The SEC Bulldogs.
Samford might have rolled up big numbers against the Mars Hills and Furmans of the world, but the offense is just dangerous enough to be a problem. Devin Hodges is a deadly-accurate, high-powered passer for a team averaging 363 yards per game for an attack that’s been able to blow up on just about everyone.
The Samford punting game is fantastic, the defense has done a nice job overall against mediocre passing teams, and there’s just enough pop to the team on both sides to make Mississippi State have to try.
The other Bulldogs are coming off a demoralizing three-game losing streak, losing to BYU in double overtime and to Kentucky in a 40-38 firefight. It’s a one-dimensional attack all working around QB Nick Fitzgerald, while the defense just can’t seem to come up with the right stop at the right time.
There’s still time to save the season, but Texas A&M, at Alabama, Arkansas and at Ole Miss close things out. So, cowbell, enjoy this. It might be the last best chance you have this year to have some fun.
The other parts of the running game will take over early and keep Fitzgerald from having to carry the offense. Samford will put up big yards, but it won’t be able to translate them into enough points in key moments to keep up.
